Sometimes without even realising that we’re doing it, we feel the need to PRETEND we’re something that we’re not. Or that we’re feeling fine when inside behind that mask we’re really far from fine.
How do I know this? I’ve done it. 25 years ago I allowed someone to break my heart. so badly it felt like he had ripped my heart out of my chest, thrown it on the ground and stomped all over it. Can you relate?
Back then I hadn’t learnt that vulnerability is one of our greatest strengths and the way forward to CONNECT and get the support we need from our family and friends. So I put on my mask and soldiered on pretending I was okay. But I was far from okay. Inside I was falling apart. And soon my mask became my Suit of Armour to protect me from the harsh reality that my world had become.
Even if you haven’t experienced heart break to the extent that I did, we ALL wear masks in our lives to a varying degree until we really feel comfortable in the skin we’re in.
The gifts of embracing who we really are including our imperfections can be the most LIBERATING and FREEING gift we can give ourselves.
So today as you start your day how about loving yourself warts and all?
I love this quote by the wonderful Louise Hay:
